Darwin & Cairns - Taekwondo for All Ages & Levels

Training Etiquette

Respect, discipline and courage are reflected in how we conduct ourselves on and off the mat.

At Red Croc Martial Arts, the values we develop through training - respect, discipline, integrity, courage, and resilience - are reflected in the standards of conduct we uphold in the dojang. These guidelines exist not to restrict, but to create an environment where everyone can train safely, learn effectively, and grow together.

Dojang (Training Hall) Etiquette

Arrival & Attendance

  • Arrive 5–10 minutes before class begins
  • If you arrive late, wait at the side of the class until the instructor gives you permission to join
  • Notify your instructor before leaving class early
  • Children must be picked up by a parent or guardian - all students remain at the club until collected
  • All dropped-off students must be brought inside by a responsible adult

Bowing Protocol

  • Always bow when entering and leaving the mats
  • Bow to each other as an expression of mutual respect
  • Blue Belts (4th Kup and above) bow to senior ranks (Brown Belt and above)
  • Black Belts and above bow to the Branch Instructor

Behaviour & Cleanliness

  • No food is permitted on the mats
  • No running, loud talking, or playing in the dojang
  • Your uniform must be clean and tidy at all times
  • Remove all jewellery, watches, and fitness trackers before training
  • Keep fingernails and toenails short and trimmed
  • Tie long hair back securely before class begins
  • Do not adjust your uniform while facing the flag, a Black Belt, or an instructor
  • Always refer to your Instructor respectfully as "Instructor [First Name]"

Training Etiquette

  • Do not talk while the instructor is speaking
  • Accept corrections respectfully - if you have questions, ask after class
  • Only instruct or coach your peers if specifically asked to by the instructor
  • Do not comment on another student's technique unless invited to do so
  • When sitting, sit cross-legged with a straight back - avoid slouching, leaning, or sitting on equipment
  • Report any injuries immediately to the Branch Instructor
  • All discipline is handled by the instructor - do not take matters into your own hands

Sparring Etiquette

  • Always spar hard but with control and respect for your partner
  • Both partners must be ready and aware before sparring begins
  • If your partner is going too hard: stop, communicate calmly, bow, and restart
  • If the issue continues after communicating, stop, bow, and report to the instructor
  • Protect your partner at all times - their safety is your responsibility as much as theirs

Remember

"The way you conduct yourself in the dojang is a reflection of your character, your respect for your instructors and training partners, and the values Red Croc Martial Arts stands for."
